Role of Electroencephalography in Presurgical Evaluation of Temporal Lobe Epilepsy
Surgery remains a therapeutic option for patients with medically refractory epilepsy. Comprehensive presurgical evaluation includes electroencephalography (EEG) and video EEG in identifying patients who are likely to benefit from surgery. Here, we discuss in detail the utility of EEG in presurgical evaluation of patients with temporal lobe epilepsy along with illustrative cases.

Since the birth of functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI)—a noninvasive tool able to visualize brain function—now 15 years ago, several clinical applications have emerged. fMRI follows from the neurovascular coupling between neuronal electrical activity and cerebrovascular physiology that leads to three effects that can contribute to the fMRI signal: an increase in the blood flow velocity...

A 14‐year‐old female was admitted to Beijing Tiantan Hospital with ictal twitch and loss of consciousness. She had no other medical history. Magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) revealed a lesion in the right parietooccipital lobe. Scalp EEG failed to detect abnormal discharges in this area. To further locate the epileptic foci, subdural electrodes were placed on the surface of the parietooccipital...
متن کاملInvasive procedures with questionable indications
Insufficient coordination of medical research and partial isolation from the international scientific community can result in application of invasive methods without sufficient indications. Here is presented an overview of renal and pancreatic biopsy studies performed in the course of the operations of pancreatic blood shunting into the systemic blood flow in type 1 diabetic patients. Furthermo...

(Chest 1992; 101:1429-33) T he pulmonary artery catheter was first described in 1970 l)y Swan, Ganz and associates. ‘ During the next decade, it rapidly evolved from a research device into a clinical tool. The pulmonary artery catheter has been successfully used for determination of cardiac output and other hemodynamic parameters to aid the clinical assessment of critically ill patients. In the...
